ABOUT NEAL HARRISHi, My name is Neal Harris and I'd like to take this opportunity to tell you a little about myself. I am a native of St. Louis, and as such I'll be able to help guide you through the city and through the journey of finding a new home. I grew up on Lafon street in University City. I graduated from University City High in 1964. Some of my fondest memories of those times were cruising with my buddies. We had a set route beginning at Wigwam then onto to Hamburger Heaven, Steak 'n Shake, Chuck-a-Burger and Goody Goody. It was just like American Graffiti, only better. After high school, I attended Florissant Valley College and worked part time at Baker Shoes on Sixth St. and Washington St. In the early 70's I worked with my Dad at his factory. We created a line of leather hair and jewelry ornaments with a peace movement theme. My Dad sent me out in hopes of selling a few hundred. The first day I only got one order - 36 units for each of the 10,000 Rexall Stores. I enjoyed that. Dad sold the factory, and I moved on to serve in various sales and management positions. Over the years I have lived in Tulsa, OK, Columbus, OH, Phoenix, AZ and Boise, ID. I've also visited approximately 47 states. I met my wife Karen in 1974 and we were married in 1975. Our daughter Aimee Michelle was born in 1979. We moved to Phoenix in 1984 where she was an A student and a promising artist. We moved back to St. Louis in 1994 and Aimee graduated from Parkway Central High School in 1997. From there she attended Hickey College for Graphic Design and graduated with a 3.9 GPA. Recently she moved to Savannah, Georgia to further her career. She arrived with no job prospects, picked up a yellow pages, made four phone calls and secured a job with the Morris Publications within two days. She did this because she did not let fear prevent her from striving to achieve her goals. My wife and I opened Burger Boy Restaurant in 1997. This was the fulfillment of a life long dream. Unfortunately, my health suffered and eventually so did my marriage - Karen and I were divorced in 2001 after 25 years of marriage. I kept Burger Boy until 2002. It was a wonderful place where good friends came to eat and chat. Unfortunately, I could no longer be on my feet for 12 hours a day - and the cliche is true - good help really is hard to find. One of my customers, and friend, at Burger Boy was Mark Magas. Mark was just starting his business when we met and I was able to refer the occasional customer as well as offer encouragement and jokes. When my employees got sick or just forgot to come in, I could call Mark and a few other amazingly kindhearted people to help wait tables or unload trucks - that is when you know who your true friends are. Now, Mark and I are in Real Estate together. Our roles as mentor and teacher have reversed somewhat, but it is still great to work in an environment based on respect and friendship. |
